11/3/09 - I got a fever....

Postby okbye » Tue Nov 03, 2009 5:58 am

Seems everyone is coming down with something lately. Sometimes I'm glad I don't get out much.

Today's question is from Rockford 10

What do you take when you are sick? Nyquil? Motrin? Nothing? More cowbell?

I took chemo for the breast cancer.....

But as far as colds or flu or whatever, I haven't been sick with anything like that since 1998. At that time I had fun with a bout of asthmatic bronchitis that had previously been "walking" pneumonia and before that, a severe cold. It ended me up in a walk-in clinic twice a day for some sort of inhalant treatment, but I have no idea what medication it was. And since then I haven't even had a sniffle, except for my usual spring allergies.

Occasional slug of Nyquil if it's warranted.

My yearly experience:

1. Feeling a bit sluggish, little feverish, bit of a sore throat. Drink hot tea.
2. Develope Sinus type headache, feel like I've been climbing mountains. Take some Sudafed.
3. Develop cough, aches are worse, have a hard time breathing, can't sleep. - Take Nyquill.
4. Sound like I have the Plague. Everything hurts. It hurts to breath. It hurts to THINK. Finally forced to go to doc's who finds a sinus infection and wheezing. Prescribes Antibiotics, Heavy Duty cough syrup, inhaler. And shakes his head as he goes out the door, wondering why it took me so long to get there.

Hopefully, this year, we won't have a repeat. (Knock wood). I've been using my Flonase religiously all year.

I'm a big fan of Nyquil and Dayquil (except for the neon colors).

They must be the only cold/flu medicines that haven't been dinked with since the whole turn-cold-medicine-into-Meth thing exploded. They certainly are the only OTC medicine you don't have to buy at the window that seem to work for me. (There must be something in their mix which causes the Meth formula to fail. The pigment?)

I really hate that when I feel the most sick, the rules demand I wait in line to see a pharmacist to get a decent medicine just because of druggies. Why can't all cold medicines put in an anti-Meth ingredient?!

I'm in the Nyquil/Dayquil camp too with Delsym for cough. That stuff works really well.

I wish pharmacies would revisit the way they make people wait in line, especially during cold and flu season. There's absolutely nothing like being healthy and having to wait in line to pick up an allergy or acid reflux prescription while the person ahead of you is sneezing, hacking and coughing and the ones behind you are snorking up their runny noses or their sick kids are breathing down your neck. Thank goodness for drive-up pharmacy windows.

Chicken Pot Pie & Mountain Dew. Only time I drink regular Dew is when I'm sick. Not sure if it's the extra caffeine or the OJ Concentrate, or what, but it helps.

Whew, finally got that out of my head. Do you realize I've had that running through my head all day??

Ok, to answer the question:
If it's a cold, Advil Cold & Sinus. It's the only stuff I've been able to take that doesn't make me fall over asleep.
Anything worse than a cold - whatever it takes to expedite the healing process. Or at least make me sleep comfortably. I'm a big baby when I get really sick. Fortunately, I haven't been really sick for years.

I usually go to the local witch doctor and pick up a shrunken head. Works wonders for keeping those sick people away. ;)

Seriously, I usually have a runny nose all winter, and occasional full-blown colds. I can live with those without any special treatment. When I get something more serious I crawl under the covers and sip broth with a saltine or two and have lemon-lime soda (if I can keep anything down at all), plus a healthy regimen of ibuprofen.

I try very hard not to take medicine. It seems like most medicines are stifling the symptoms that result from the body trying to naturally fend off the infection, not the infection itself. When I feel sick, I stick to bed rest, lots of fluids, and warm showers.

When I was very little, if I had so much as a sniffle, my mom would force a tablespoon of Pedia-Care down the hatch. Once I got a little older, the Pedia-Care became Robitussin (BARF). Nowadays, if I feel like I'm getting sick, I drink a few cups of lavender chamomile tea and take a Tylenol. Seems to work just fine.

I try not to take medicine for basic symptoms unless I am just miserable. Then I generally do the dayquil/nyquil thing.
